Background of the Study
Multilingualism is a defining characteristic of Nigerian urban centers, where diverse linguistic communities coexist and interact. This study examines the impact of multilingualism on Nigerian syntax by analyzing code-switching practices in urban discourse. Code-switching—the alternation between languages within a conversation—is a common phenomenon in Nigerian cities and influences syntactic constructions (Okoro, 2023). Urban speakers often blend elements from English, Pidgin, and indigenous languages to negotiate identity and enhance communicative efficiency. This research compares syntactic patterns in conversations among multilingual urban dwellers, investigating how switching between languages affects sentence structure, word order, and overall grammaticality. The study also explores the sociolinguistic factors—such as education, socioeconomic status, and cultural identity—that drive code-switching behaviors (Adebayo, 2024). By analyzing recorded interactions and interviews with urban residents, this research aims to reveal the dynamic interplay between language contact and syntactic adaptation in a rapidly evolving linguistic landscape (Chinwe, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the ubiquity of code-switching in Nigerian urban centers, there is limited research on its syntactic implications in multilingual contexts. Inconsistent language mixing may lead to alterations in sentence structure that challenge conventional grammatical norms (Okoro, 2023). This gap in knowledge affects our understanding of how multilingualism shapes syntax and may have implications for language teaching and policy. The lack of systematic comparative studies on code-switching in different urban environments hinders the development of standardized approaches to manage linguistic diversity in formal communication settings (Adebayo, 2024). This study seeks to address these issues by examining syntactic variations resulting from code-switching and identifying factors that influence these adaptations (Chinwe, 2025).

The study is limited to analyzing code-switching in urban centers and does not extend to rural or non-multilingual contexts.
